Grade Calculator

Wondering what grade you'll end up with? Or what score you need on the final exam to pass or hit your target? This grade calculator does both — weighted averages and final exam planning — so you can focus on studying, not math.

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator has two modes: (1) calculate your current grade based on assignment scores and weights, and (2) calculate what score you need on the final exam to reach your target grade.

How to Use This Calculator

Calculate Current Grade:

  1. Enter each category (e.g., Homework, Midterm, Quizzes).
  2. Enter the weight of each category (must total 100%).
  3. Enter your score for each category.
  4. Click Calculate to see your weighted grade.

Calculate Needed Final Exam Score:

  1. Enter your current grade.
  2. Enter the weight of the final exam.
  3. Enter your target grade.
  4. Click Calculate to see the score needed on the final.

Grade Calculation Formulas

Weighted Grade = Σ (Score × Weight) ÷ Total Weight

Needed Final Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight

Example Calculation

Your grades so far:

  • Homework (20%): 92
  • Quizzes (15%): 85
  • Midterm (25%): 78
  • Final Exam (40%): not yet taken

Current grade (before final) = (92×0.20 + 85×0.15 + 78×0.25) ÷ 0.60 = (18.4 + 12.75 + 19.5) ÷ 0.60 = 83.6 (B)

Target final grade: 90 (A−). Needed final exam score:

  • = (90 − 83.6 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (90 − 50.16) ÷ 0.40 = 98.6

Why Use This Calculator?

Knowing what you need on the final — before you walk in — lets you calibrate your study effort. If you need a 60% to pass, that's a different approach than needing a 95% to maintain your scholarship.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Weights not summing to 100% — double-check that all category weights add up exactly to 100.
  • Forgetting dropped assignments — if your class drops the lowest score, factor that in before entering your category average.
  • Confusing points and percentages — some classes grade on total points; others use percentage categories. Make sure you know which system your class uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What score do I need on the final to pass?

Enter your current grade, the final's weight, and "60" as your target grade (typically a D). The calculator will show you the minimum score needed.

How do I calculate a weighted average?

Multiply each score by its weight (as a decimal), add them all up, and divide by the total weight. This calculator does it automatically when you enter all categories.

What if my instructor curves grades?

Enter your curved score in each category. If the curve is a flat addition (e.g., +5 points on every test), add 5 to each test score before entering it.

What is an A in percentage terms?

Typically: A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69%, F = below 60%. Exact cutoffs vary by school and instructor.

Can I use this for middle school or high school grades?

Absolutely. The calculator works for any grading system that uses percentages and weighted categories — from elementary to postgraduate.

Conclusion

Take the uncertainty out of finals week. Use this grade calculator to know exactly where you stand and exactly what you need — so you can study smarter and walk into your final with a clear target in mind.

Don't forget to check if your instructor "curves" the grades! A 90% may be easier to achieve than the raw numbers suggest if the whole class receives extra points.
